Women face many obstacles throughout their career that often delay, or even end everything they’ve worked for. Life running its course is usually the biggest wall that hinges their progress as they get married and plan for a family to begin to form. When these things take place, they are expected to drop their careers and become caregivers while the husband continues to work. Having a family may be one of your biggest goals, but there are certainly other career-oriented goals you had hoped to achieve and have worked towards that you would like to complete and wouldn’t it be nice to have both?

It can be more difficult for women to achieve their career goals because of this expectation to drop everything and care for the family. They spend much less time in the workforce, making it hard to move up and advance. This is why it’s of the utmost importance to have a plan in place so your goals don’t get left in the dust. Make sure you are comfortable with all the conditions of your company’s maternity leave policy and that your family will be fine on one income for the time being. It’s important to sit down with your financial adviser and spouse to set goals and timelines, with the understanding that these may change, to be ready for anything that arises plus the additional baby costs.

Make sure if you’re thinking of starting a family that you plan far in advance so you aren’t left scrambling to pay bills and make ends meet. Develop a timeline for you to slowly get back into the workforce so you can focus on yourself again and achieve the things you’ve worked so hard for. While us women tend to put so much focus and effort on taking care of others, we have to remember to take care of ourselves too. Don’t leave your dreams behind, you’re very capable of achieving everything you hope for, and laying out a plan is the first step in achieving those goals.
